My New Favorite Iphone App and HILL RUNS!
Monday, April 16, 2012 at 08:58AM This weekend I headed to the Cape to spend some time with my mom and our Newfie, Lilly. Near our house there are some great dirt hills where the power lines are. I took full advantage of the gorgeous day and had a GREAT high intensity workout.
I used the Iphone app, Runkeeper, to track my route, pace and elevation. If you are working out outside and like to track progress I highly recommend downloading it. it gives you updates every 5 minutes on how long you have been running, average pace and current pace. I also love that you can play music (even a pandora station) and the music automatically lowers during the updates, then brings the volume back up when its done. It's also FREE to download!
After the workout, you can go to www.runkeeper.com to see your entire route mapped out. They also send an e-mail if you beat your personal record for time or distance. What great motivation!
The website also suggests pairing the app with either a Wahoo heart rate monitor for the iphone or the Polar wearLink+transmitter with Bluetooth for the Android to provide heart rate data. I plan on buying the iphone monitor in the future. For now, its cool enough having the data that is provided without it.
Here are the results of my run.

The first 20 minutes was more like a walk and some jogging in place because I attempted to run with Lilly (the bear), who I found out is not the running type. She was good company though! I did try to keep moving while she was doing "her business", which happened to be every 2 minutes, but that's not shown in the results since I wasn't wearing a heart rate monitor. It just means that my average pace is way down because of the stop and go during the first mile or so.
What are some of your favorite apps for outdoor workouts??
